Overcoming Fear: How to Push Through and Grow Your Business
Fear is something that every business owner faces at some point. Whether it's fear of failure, fear of rejection, or fear of making the wrong decision, it can be paralyzing. But here’s the truth: fear doesn’t have to define you.
Fear and anxiety are natural reactions to uncertainty. The key to success isn’t avoiding fear—it’s learning how to push through it. In business, the most successful entrepreneurs feel fear just like everyone else—but they take action anyway.
In this blog, I’ll show you:
How fear manifests in business and how to identify it
Why action is the best antidote to fear
Practical steps to overcome fear and keep moving forward
Fear in Business: False Evidence Appearing Real
One of the best definitions of fear I’ve ever heard is: False Evidence Appearing Real.
Think about a time when you hesitated to make a call to a difficult client, quote a higher price, or hire a new employee. Your mind likely started running through worst-case scenarios:
“What if they say no?”
“What if I fail and lose money?”
“What if I don’t know enough to do this?”
But here’s the reality: most of those fears never come true. Instead, they live in our heads, holding us back from the very opportunities that could change our lives and businesses.
Fear is often based on imagined problems, not real ones. Challenge those thoughts and ask, “What if things actually go right?”
How to Overcome Fear in Business
1. Take Action – Even When You’re Scared
As an Army veteran, I’ve learned that the only way to overcome fear is to move forward in spite of it. In the military, fear is always present, but soldiers succeed because they take action, even when afraid.
In business, the same principle applies. You can’t sit back and wait for fear to disappear—you have to push through.
Next time fear strikes, do this:
✔ Pick one small action that moves you forward. (Example: If you’re afraid of raising prices, start with one client.)
✔ Make the call, send the email, post the content—whatever the next step is, just do it.
✔ Remember that action builds confidence—every step forward weakens fear’s grip.
The more you act despite fear, the more fearless you become.
2. Get Support From the Right People
When fear creeps in, who do you turn to? The right people can either lift you up or feed your fears.
If you’re always around negative people who doubt every idea, you’ll stay stuck.
Surround yourself with mentors, business owners, and leaders who push you forward.
How to find the right support:
✔ Join a business mastermind group or mentorship program.
✔ Talk to trusted colleagues who have been through similar challenges.
✔ Read books and listen to podcasts from successful entrepreneurs.
Fear thrives in isolation. Surround yourself with action-takers who help you push past doubts.
3. Reframe Failure as a Learning Tool
Most fear in business comes from fear of failure. But here’s a mindset shift: failure isn’t the opposite of success—it’s part of the process.
Every successful entrepreneur has failed many times before making it big. The difference? They didn’t let failure stop them.
✔ Instead of fearing failure, see it as a learning opportunity.
✔ Ask yourself: “What can I learn from this?”
✔ Adjust and keep moving forward.
Failure only stops you if you let it. Learn, adjust, and keep going.
Practical Steps to Overcome Fear Today
If fear is holding you back right now, here’s a simple 3-step plan to break free:
Step 1: Identify Your Fear – What exactly are you afraid of? Name it.
Step 2: Take One Small Action – Choose one thing you can do today to move forward.
Step 3: Get Encouragement – Talk to someone who will push you, not hold you back.
Small actions lead to big confidence. Don’t wait—start now.
