Writing Down Goals: The Secret to Turning Dreams into Reality

July 31, 20254 min read

For years, I had dreams, big ones. I would picture the kind of business I wanted to build, the lifestyle I hoped to create, and the kind of leader I aimed to become. I’d think about these things on long drives, in the shower, or lying in bed at night. I told myself I’d get there someday.

But “someday” kept slipping further and further away. Months would go by, and not much would change. Then one day, a mentor asked me a question that stopped me in my tracks:
Have you written it down?

No. I hadn’t.

That night, I sat down with a notebook and scribbled out everything I wanted to accomplish: personal, professional, and financial. I didn’t filter or overthink, I just got it all on paper.

That’s when things started shifting.

I’m not exaggerating when I say that one small act, writing it down, completely changed the way I approached my goals and, more importantly, it changed my results.

Now, it’s a daily habit. I don’t just think about where I want to go, I write it down, again and again, and I teach my team to do the same.

Here’s why that simple act works so well.

Why Writing It Down Makes Such a Big Difference

Most people never take the time to write down their goals. They carry them around in their heads like a running to-do list, hoping they’ll somehow fall into place.

There is a real science behind why writing them down makes them stick. When you write something by hand, your brain treats it differently. It becomes more real, more urgent, and more achievable.

When a goal is written:

  • It stops being a vague idea and becomes something you can actually chase.

  • It sharpens your focus. You start to notice things that help you move closer to it.

  • It keeps you committed. You see it on the page and remember what matters.

  • And maybe most importantly, your brain starts working behind the scenes to figure out how to make it happen.

In short: If it’s not written down, it’s just a wish.

For the longest time, I’d set goals like this: “I want to make more money.” Or, “I need to grow my business.” Those kinds of goals never got me anywhere. They were too vague, and there was no target, no timeline, no real plan.

Eventually, I realized unclear goals create unclear results.

When I started writing clear, specific goals, like “Increase revenue by 20% in the next six months by booking five additional contracts per month,” things changed fast. I had direction, urgency, and a reason to act.

What This Means for Your Business

Writing down goals isn’t just about personal growth; it’s a game-changer for your painting business.

Want to increase revenue? Write down how much and by when.
Want to build a stronger team?
Write out exactly who you need and how you’ll find them.
Want better clients?
Describe them, target them, and commit to serving them well.

The most successful people I know didn’t get lucky; they got serious, and they got specific.
